Tunbridge Wells table tennis star Will Bayley claims medals in final event before Games.
Table tennis star Will Bayley continued his preparations for this summer’s Paralympics Games after picking up two medals in the last competition before the summer’s main event.
Tunbridge Wells resident Bayley was one of 13 British athletes competing in the table tennis in Bratislava, Slovakia, in the Factor 40 Para Table Tennis event this week.
And it proved to be a successful event for the 24-year-old who won a Bronze medal in Class 7.
He went one better in the team event, winning a silver in Class 3 to bring Great Britain’s overall medal tally to 10 for the competition.
Bayley was one of the first names on the team sheet for the para table tennis squad earlier this year, having represented the Great Britain paraylmpic team four years ago in Beijing.
The selection capped off a memorable year for the man who grew up playing for the Byng Hall Table Tennis Club in Tunbridge Wells.
In October he returned from the European Championships in Split, Croatia, where he achieved a Gold medal in the singles, Silver in the team event and was voted European Players’ Player of the Year for 2011. He was subsequently named the world number one in January.
He will now be taking part in the training camps in Sheffield and Slovenia before the Games.
