The 20-year-old batsman made his professional debut in April last year

A former England Under 19 captain has joined Kent on loan for the 2017 season.

Joe Weatherley, 20, made his professional debut for Hampshire in April 2016 and has scored one half-century in two first-class appearances.

The right-handed batsman, who also bowls off spin, has played two matches in the Royal London One-Day Cup games and five times in the NatWest T20 Blast.

Weatherley said: “I’m delighted to join such a great club and work with Matt Walker, Sam Northeast and the squad.

“I know Adam Rouse from his days at Hampshire and he’s had lots of positive things to say about Kent so I can’t wait to get stuck in.”

Kent captain Sam Northeast added: “Joe is a promising young cricketer with a lot of potential.

“He has joined us for pre-season training and gives us an extra option with the bat.”
