‘Fantastic’ performance says Gills boss Martin Allen

Martin Allen hailed another magical afternoon at Priestfield as Gillingham ended Burton Albion’s eight game unbeaten run with a 4-1 win.

The Gills are now ten points clear of the play-off places, while they are still three clear of second placed Port Vale.

Gillingham were 2-0 up at half time thanks to goals from defenders Tom Flanagan and Matt Fish. Zander Diamond pulled one back for Burton on 54 minutes, but five minutes later the Gills put the result beyond doubt with two goals in four minutes from Myles Weston and Joe Martin.

“Fantastic, didn’t we play well? It was a magical afternoon, great entertainment. I was very proud,” Allen told BBC Radio Kent.

“They’re a really good team, I don’t know if it (the performance) is the best of the season. The players are very bright, they’re hungry and they’re a pleasure to work with, and for Gillingham supporters, you have got a fantastic group of players.”

Burton manager Gary Rowett was full of praise for Gillingham.

“They’re by far the best team we’ve played against this season. If I had to tip now, I’d say they will probably win the league comfortably,” he told BBC Radio Derby.

“They gave us a really good lesson. I think it’s really important that we learn from that as a group of players. They ran in behind our back four and that’s always hard to defend against, but we didn’t do our job properly today. That was the reason why we made the job so hard for ourselves in the end.”
