More signed on at Sittingbourne as Ward’s squad takes shape
Joint Sittingbourne boss Danny Ward admits to being pleasantly surprised at how the rebuilding process has gone at the club.
He and his brother Jim were faced with recruiting nearly a full squad after taking over last month, but have been inundated with phone calls from players wanting to join, and while some moves have fallen through, Ward is pleased with the progress made.
“It’s looking quite promising,” he said. “They are all young, athletic and dynamic, but it wasn’t when we got here.
“It’s looking a lot better than I thought it would be, there are a lot of clubs having more trouble than we are.
“I am pleasantly surprised - they all told me the money wouldn’t get a side together. The whole place is buzzing to be honest with you.”
Deals were finalised this week for John Nwoko, Elie Kayambe, Jonathan Hogg, Curtis Winnett, Nick Tredwell, Bradley Spice, and Ashley Ulph for the forthcoming season, while he is hoping four more will join at the end of this week.
He begrudgingly had to let a number of trialists go as well after an in-house friendly on Tuesday night.
“It’s a pity, because if we had a reserve side they could fight for their place,” he said. “There was a bit of pressure on them, but we have signed some on dual registration and they will go to Kent league clubs.
“Some of the football at times was excellent, it was the first time a lot of them had kicked a ball in a while. If their attitude wasn’t right we would cast them aside, but everybody is doing what’s asked of them.”
Fans got to see just 45 minutes of them in action in their opening pre-sesaon game last Saturday against Sittingbourne Academy as heavy rain ended proceedings. However it has been re-arranged to take place tomorrow in a noon kick-off at Bourne Park.
They will also play Milton and Fulston on Tuesday night in a 7.45pm kick off at the same venue. It had previuosly been pencilled in to take place at Sittingbourne Academy.
