Jon Main sad that injury curtailed return to Longmeadow before joining Welling this week.
Jon Main has admitted he is gutted to have left Tonbridge Angels after injury cut short his second spell at the club.
The fans’ favourite penned a one-year deal with Blue Square South rivals Welling United this week after his release from Longmeadow, which wasn’t a surprise for the 31-year-old.
The striker was a prolific goalscorer in his first few years with the Angels before Tommy Warrilow sold him for a club record £25,000 to AFC Wimbledon in 2007, and after falling out of favour their last year, Warrilow brought him back.
But he managed just a handful of appearances after suffering two serious injuries on the same knee, the second in February which ruled him out for the season.
“I’m gutted the way it ended,” he said. “Tonbridge were kind to me, and the manager was brilliant all year and the fans there always cheered my name.
“Last year was a bad year for me personally, I didn’t want it to be like that, but I cannot control my injuries.”
He was advised to have three months off after having cortisone injections, before training again.
He said: “I did four or five training sessions and I felt good, I came on in a game and scored a penalty, and the next game I came on against Dartford. I went up for a silly header and the goalkeeper landed on me and it buckled my knee, the same one and ripped the medial ligaments.
“It was just bad luck it happened to be the same one and that was my season over.”
He knew then that he wasn’t likely to be offered a second season with the club.
“I could sort of guess,” he said. “I was a big name I suppose, and six or seven appearances just wasn’t good enough, the writing was on the wall for me.
“I have got no grudges against Tommy. Everyone down there knows that I love that club, it’s been good to me.”
He said he was more than happy to join the Wings after knowing of Jamie Day’s interest.
