Maidstone council’s chief executive has announced today he is stepping down after ten years in the role.
David Petford’s decision is part of a planned downsizing of the council’s senior management team to help meet its savings target.
The restructure will save £220,000 a year as the council’s directorates will be reduced from three to two.
Mr Petford will be replaced by one of the three existing directors.
The candidates for the job are - David Edwards, director of change and environmental Services, Alison Broom, director of prosperity and gegeneration or Zena Cooke, director of resources and partnerships.
Mr Petford said: “All three of the directors have been appointed in the last couple of years.
“We knew that I would be reaching retirement age in 2010 so on each occasion we went to get someone with the capabilities and skills to become Chief Executive.
“I know I will be leaving the council in safe hands and in great shape to continue to deliver first class services to the people of Maidstone.”
Leader Chris Garland said the changes will allow the council to build a “leaner structure” with two directors, but he also took the opportunity to congratulate the former chief executive on his achievements.
Councillor Garland said: “During David’s time the Council has been recognised as a top performing council in Kent and nationally.
“Maidstone has prospered with new developments such as Fremlin Walk and the council has cut costs and improved services with achievements such as the new Maidstone Gateway.”
Mr Petford will officially step down to enjoy his retirement on Monday, June 7.
