KENT NEWS: A husband accused of planting a car bomb that exploded while his pregnant wife was inside has been charged with attempted murder.

Former Army explosives expert Nicholas Fabian, 32, of Highview, Vigo, was arrested following the incident on Saturday afternoon which left partner Victoria, 32, with serious leg injuries.

He has also been charged with unlawful possession of section one ammunition and will appear before Dartford magistrates today.

Witnesses said Fabian pulled his wife from the blazing wreckage of her silver Mazda 323 following the explosion, which took place just after 1pm on Friday.

Their two young children were in another car nearby with their father.

The area was cordoned off while bomb disposal experts investigated.

Doctors believe the couple's unborn baby was unharmed.

A statement released by Mrs Fabian's family yesterday read: "We are deeply saddened and shocked by Friday’s incident and the sequence of events as they unfold.

"At the moment all our energy and attention is focused on supporting Vicky and her children.

"She is in the best place and has started her long road to recovery."

Former Army colleagues of Fabian, who left the Army in 2003, told reporters they believe he had been left traumatised by previous tours of duty in Northern Ireland and Bosnia.

Damian Thompson – who served with him in Omagh – said: "He had quite a lot of difficulty dealing with the issues in Northern Ireland.

"He was going into himself. He was very quiet and those were always the ones you were wary of."
