Kent International Airport
KENT NEWS:

Three kilograms of cocaine have been found inside yams at Manston’s Kent International Airport.

UK Border Agency officers are investigating after the drugs, with an estimated street value of £120,000, were found in the fruit on Tuesday last week (Feb 23).

The yams were part of a consignment of produce that had arrived on a flight from Accra in Ghana.

UK Border Agency officers searched the consignment and found white powder in one of four boxes of yams.

The powder reacted positively to a test for cocaine.

No arrests have been made, but enquiries by UK Border Agency investigators are continuing.

Matt Clarke, chief executive of Kent International Airport, said: “Unfortunately every port of entry into the UK is a prospective target for illegal trafficking.

“We work very closely with the UK Border Agency to ensure that the standards of search and border protection at Kent International Airport are extremely robust.

“This recent find demonstrates that the systems in place work well and sends a strong message to traffickers that Kent International Airport is not the place for them.”

Ray Payne, assistant director for the UK Border Agency, said: “UK Border Agency officers work tirelessly 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to detect and prevent drugs from being smuggled into the UK.

“We are determined to prevent this terrible trade, which can have such a destructive impact on the lives of so many.

“Anyone with information about activity they suspect may be linked to drug-smuggling should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
