Daish gives Fleet tough workout on weekend off

Ebbsfleet United manager Liam Daish has put his players through a gruelling training programme this week as he looks to sharpen fitness ahead of next week’s trip to York City.

With the majority of Blue Square Premier sides in FA Cup action today, Fleet have a weekend off and the break could prove an ideal tonic after last week’s 1-0 defeat at home to Wrexham, a match which stretched their losing run to four.

Daish was encouraged by his players’ reaction following the 3-0 loss to Bromley, and felt things could have gone differently if two key decisions had fallen their way. Leon Crooks and Elliot Charles were both red-carded in the second-half, leaving Fleet, already a goal down, facing an uphill struggle.

“We appealed Leon’s red card as the ball was 30-yards in the air, so I don’t so how he could possibly have denied a goalscoring opportunity,” said Daish. “We were thinking of appealing against Elliot’s as well but having looked at the video, both feet were off the floor and we know what the ruling is when that happens.

“We showed good spirit against Wrexham and we started well but we’re not doing it over 90 minutes – we need to finish games as we start them. We want to use this break to get a few players back from injury and we’ve worked the boys hard this week, rather like a mini pre-season.”

Striker Charles has returned to Barnet early, as his suspension would have prevented him from appearing in Fleet colours again before his loan spell ended. Meanwhile, youngsters Scott Shulton and Charlie Read have joined Bishop’s Stortford and Bromley on one-month loans respectively.
