Record holder Mary Chapelhow
Potters from across the country are gearing-up to battle it out this weekend as they try to smash a world record, Yourmaidstone reports.

The Friars' Aylesford Priory is playing host to the Guinness World Record attempt for making the most amount of pots during its annual Potters Market.

Heats have already taken place today (Friday) and will continue tomorrow, with the world record attempt taking place on Sunday.

The Friars is entering its own contestant, Mark ‘Billy’ Byles, who is the co-founded co-founder of Aylesford Pottery, set within religious ground.

Mr Byles, from Ashford, has been helping run the car-park for today’s Potter Market but has his mind focused on the event ahead.

He said: “I’m feeling pretty confident, but I have damaged my hand from making huge Terracotta pots – I have had it in ice so hopefully it will be ok.

“I work in a production line so this is what I do every day and I normally make up to 200 pots a day and that’s at a casual pace.”

Current world-record holder, Mary Chapelhow, told Yourmaidstone that Mr Byles is her strongest competition but feels it could be time for a new champion.

She said: “This is Billy’s thing because he works in production and is used to it so he should be feeling pretty confident.

“I have been doing this for many years now so maybe it is time for a change and let someone else be the world record holder.”

To beat Mrs Chapelhow’s record Mr Byles will need to make more 83 pots within an hour that meet Guinness’s size and quality specifications.

The Potters Market will be open between 10am and 5pm.

Entry is £4 for adults, accompanied children enter free and £3 for concessions.
