Bromley Boys is a must read for non-league fans

COLD winter nights watching your side struggle to string two passes together. Sound familiar? For those of us that know non-league football all too well, it can often be a lonely experience, watching a game where the crowd seems bigger queuing for a bus on the way to the game.

For 14-year-old Dave Roberts, watching his beloved Bromley was the highlight of his week.

It didn’t matter that his side were on a barren run which included losing 21 of their last 22 games that eventually saw them bottom of the league and having conceded more than 100 goals over the season.

Author Roberts tells the story of the 1969/70 Isthmian League in his book, The Bromley Boys in fantastic detail.

The book epitomises what is so good about non-league football as Roberts travels from Wealdstone to St Albans to watch his favourite team, while all his school friends were more interested in the top teams such as Arsenal.

The Bromley Boys provides a true reflection of life as a non-league football fan and the blind faith shown in one’s team.

With laugh aloud moments as young Dave Roberts reveals his love for Bromley, sheepskin coats, skinheads and his best mate’s big sister, The Bromley Boys is well worth a read.
Published by Portico Books at £10.99.
