A pedestrian who was standing next to a parked car off the carriageway of the A229 Thanet Way has died after being hit by a car transporter.

The man, a 54-year-old understood to live locally, was standing next to a grey Porsche Boxster at around 9am on Monday when he was struck by the Scania car transporter on the London-bound carriageway near Dargate.

Police officers and the South East Coast Ambulance Service attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

As a result of the smash, the road was shut in both directions between the Brenley Corner junction and the A290 turnoff for Whitstable.

The coastbound carriageway re-opened swiftly but the London-bound closure remained in place for some 12 hours, eventually opening to traffic again at around 9pm.

Meanwhile, officers would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the car transporter or the man standing next to the Porsche immediately prior to the collision.
