One man has died at the scene

A lorry driver from Gravesend has been arrested following a fatal crash on the M25 on Friday morning.

Long delays are still being reported anticlockwise between junction 5 for the M26 and junction 4 for Orpington, after the motorway was brought to a standstill when two lorries collided just after 6am.

A green Scania articulated lorry collided with a white Iveco recovery truck which had stopped on the hard shoulder after a car broke down.

Kent Police have confirmed the owner of the recovery truck, a Chatham man in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson said: “He was not inside his vehicle at the time of the incident.

“A 42-year-old man from Gravesend has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and remains in custody.

“Witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are urged to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 01622 798538 quoting reference DM/212/17.”

A spokesperson from Secamb added: “We were called to reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle between junctions five and four of the M25 motorway at about 6.15am today. We sent a critical care paramedic team, single responder and air ambulance team. However, efforts to revive the patient were unsuccessful.”

Two lanes of the motorway have now reopened to traffic, but Highways England is not expecting delays to clear fully until around 7pm tonight.
