Nigel Farage said over the weekend he’d “probably” stand in any potential by-election triggered

Ukip has confirmed it has opened nominations for candidates to stand in South Thanet - even though there is no by-election currently planned.

Speculation has gathered steam in recent days that a re-run of the 2015 vote could be triggered following an expenses scandal in which the Conservative Party is said to have “understated” spending during campaigning for the Kent seat.

In that election, Craig Mackinlay was victorious over then-Ukip leader Nigel Farage.

It comes after Mr Mackinlay was allegedly quizzed by Kent Police for six hours, though the force and the MP himself are yet to confirm this.

Mr Farage confirmed for a second time over the weekend that he’d “probably” stand in any potential by-election triggered, and it appears Ukip chiefs are confident, confirming to Kent News they are seeking potential candidates in both South Thanet and Leigh, in Greater Manchester.

Meanwhile, Ukip leader of Thanet District Council, Chris Wells, has again called for Mr Mackinlay to step down.

“This is systematic cheating, and if he has a decent, moral bone in his body he’ll resign,” he told Kent News.

“There’ll be a proper selection process but if Nigel is selected, I welcome him running and I do think he can win.”

Cllr Wells also said allegations over Ukip’s spending in the same seat were “chalk and cheese”.

Mr Farage has also denied any wrongdoing.

Mr Mackinlay is yet to comment.
