Tunbridge Wells is set to get its very own version of board game classic Monopoly - and now promoters of the game are appealing for your help on just which famous local landmark should appear where on the board.
What’s more, you can even vote for this website’s sister title, Kent on Sunday. to appear on it too.
Among those venues vying to get the top slots will be the likes of the Pantiles, the Trinity Theatre, shopping centre Royal Victoria Place, King Charles The Martyr Church and the town’s famous spa, which could land on the famous Water Works spot on the board.
It won a contest out of the UK’s ‘royal’ towns to be the focus of the game, beating off the likes of Leamington Spa, which came second, and Windsor in third.
The company Winning Moves UK has an official licence from Monopoly manufacturers Hasbro to create the game - following in the footsteps of other specially created games for towns and cities across the UK - among them Canterbury.
It officially unveils the board’s launch at the Trinity Theatre on Wednesday and confirmed it hopes the game will be in the shops and available to buy in good time to capture the Christmas market.
Among those confirming the game was ‘passing go’ were Robert Osborne, custom games manager from Winning Moves UK and the town’s mayor, David Neve.
Mr Osborne explained: “We expect to be absolutely spoilt for choices on which Tunbridge Wells landmarks will star and feature in this game. It’s an opportunity to showcase the great and the very good of one of Britain’s most historic towns.
“But absolutely everything is up for grabs.”
The public can now nominate the landmarks to replace the traditional likes of the Old Kent Road, Pall Mall and Mayfair on the special trading board game version - as well as those on Chance and Community Chest.
Adds Mr Osborne: “The game will see around 30 leading Royal Tunbridge Wells landmarks replacing the famous Monopoly addresses.
“We are inviting the public to help us put this special edition together by sending in votes and suggestions. From our very initial soundings we have so far had the most wonderful response. The game will be themed in sets so, for example, a shopping centre could appear on Oxford Street, a paper on the Fleet Street location, the Town Hall on Whitehall, a theatre such as Trinity in the ‘West End’ section such as Leicester Square and an art gallery on trendy Angel, Islington.
“But we want to hear from the public – that are both serious and fun suggestions. For example, as very many of the Chance and Community Chest cards will be Tunbridge Wells themed, one could maybe send players back three spaces for getting stuck in Tunbridge Wells’ notorious traffic bottlenecks. Or another send players to Tonbridge instead of the jail.
“The game will go into production to be ready in time for this Christmas (2017) and will hit shop shelves this October.”
Votes and suggestions should be sent to to: firstname.lastname@example.org or by traditional post to: Monopoly Royal Tunbridge Wells Edition, Winning Moves UK, 7 Praed Street, London W2 1NP. Polls open at 10am on Wednesday and close at 11.59pm on March 31.
And don’t forget to nominate Kent on Sunday while you’re at it.
Added a spokesman: “We are sure the Kent on Sunday would make a great Community Chest space on the board – being a big part of the local community – or a Chance location.”
