The coastbound carriageway is expected to be closed for “a few hours”

Motorists approaching the Channel Tunnel are being warned to expect travel chaos this afternoon following a smash on the M20.

The coastbound carriageway is currently closed between junctions 11 for Hythe and 12 for Cheriton due to a crash between two lorries close to the slip road for the tunnel at 12.15pm.

Traffic is being diverted onto the A20 and access for passengers heading to Eurotunnel will be via the A20.

Passengers were already being warned of three hour delays for Eurotunnel journeys into France following an issue in the tunnel, which is also affecting Eurostar services.

Police say the carriageway is likely to be closed for “a few hours” while an investigation is carried out at the scene.

With congestion expected on the A20, motorists are being advised to use alternative routes where possible.

The Air Ambulance has been called to deal with a reported casualty.
