Record number of people visit promotional website and visitor information centre in Margate

Businesses are celebrating after a triumphant summer season with a surge of people visiting the isle.

The Margate visitor information centre saw a 25 per cent increase in July and August compared to last year, and a website promoting Thanet received record visits online.

The 200th birthday of Dickens and Pugin believed to stimulate interest from tourists, and traders are celebrating the arrival of thousands of visitors.

Hornby’s operations director and general manager Nick Cole said: “The Hornby Visitor Centre in 2012 has continued to surpass our expectations in terms of visitors and revenue, despite the many distractions from national events during the summer.”

Director at Quex Museum, House and Gardens Karen Botha added: “Powell-Cotton Museum, Quex House and Gardens has enjoyed a fantastic 2012 season.

“A series of museum exhibitions and the launch of our garden restoration project have successfully attracted more visitors.

Cllr Iris Johnston said there was now a “feel-good factor” across the isle.

She added: “Those who run our local attractions have set a wonderful example and I know our tourism industry is developing a magnificent future.”
