There was also a service in Gravesend Borough Market on Saturday

Crowds gathered around a carpet of knitted poppies in Gravesend on Sunday to mark two minute’s silence in honour of the country’s fallen servicemen and women.

Remembrance Sunday services were held across Gravesham, with the largest turnout coming to Windmill Hill War Memorial for a parade and service.

But it was Gravesend Borough Market that hosted the borough’s first event of the weekend.

On Saturday the mayor of Gravesham, Harold Craske, joined the leader of the council, David Turner, along with cadets and the civic chaplain reverend Jacqueline Littlewood, to lead a two minute silence on Armistice Day.

The following day, the same group was joined by hundreds more for a parade to Windmill Hill War Memorial, where there were prayers, hymns and music as part of the remembrance service, before wreaths were laid at the memorial, next to a carpet of poppies knitted by the Gravesham community.

Following Sunday’s event, the carpet has been moved to Gravesend Borough Market, and will be on display until Friday November 17.
