Margate’s scenic railway has had it’s listing upgraded to Grade II* by English Heritage, putting it in the top six per cent of important listed buildings in the country.
"We’re delighted at this news, as the scenic railway thoroughly deserves its upgraded listing status."
Margate’s scenic railway on the former Dreamland site has had its listed status upgraded by English Heritage.
The wooden roller coaster, built in 1920, is now registered an Grade II* listed, putting it in the top six per cent of the most important listed buildings in the country.
The move was made following an application by Thanet District Council, and English Heritage describe the scenic railway as being of “more than special historic importance”, saying that its “special interest is clear and its survival remarkable.”
The wooden structure, which was severely damaged by a fire in April 2008, was the first of two amusement rides to gain listed status in 2002.
"We’re delighted at this news, as the scenic railway thoroughly deserves its upgraded listing status."
It is the oldest surviving wooden roller coaster in the UK, the second oldest in Europe and the fourth oldest in the world.
Emily Gee, English Heritage’s designation team leader for the south east, said: “Listing in a higher grade is reserved for a small proportion of designated places nationally.
“In spite of alteration and replacement to this remarkable timber structure, its age, rarity and design interest mean that listing in Grade II* is fully warranted.
“Alongside the Grade II* cinema and Grade II menagerie at Dreamland, the remarkable heritage context of Margate is clear.”
The restoration of the scenic railway will be at the heart of a multi-million pound project to create the world’s first heritage amusement park at Dreamland, Margate.
The Dreamland Trust’s chairman, Nick Laister, said: “It is wonderful news that the scenic railway listing has been upgraded from Grade II to Grade II*.
“This is a great springboard for the restoration works that will be starting on the ride over the coming months.”
Cllr Simon Moores from Thanet District Council, said: “We’re delighted at this news, as the scenic railway thoroughly deserves its upgraded listing status.”
