Medway Council confirmed it was to carry out internal decorative work

Rochester Castle will be closed for the rest of this week for maintenance and repairs.

A statement on the English Heritage website said: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, Rochester Castle is closed until further notice. We’re very sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

Medway Council, which owns the site, confirmed the closure was made to carry out internal decorative work, and that it was not a structural issue.

The 12th century building is regarded as one of the best-preserved castles in the country, and also hosts music concerts as well as tours, including a recent Craig David gig.
