Fire chiefs are today launching an investigation into the cause of a blaze in the early hours of the morning at a Canterbury care home.

Crews arrived at the scene at Pilgirms Lodge on Pilgrims Way in the city at 1.15am to find a fire in a bedroom on the first floor of the property.

All residents and staff were safely evacuated to another building and were assessed by paramedics and supported by the fire service’s volunteer response team as well as Red Cross volunteers.

A spokesperson said: “Firefighters worked hard to contain the fire and used breathing apparatus, hose reel jets, a covering jet and a ventilation fan to extinguish the blaze.

“Crews are now cutting away and damping down. The cause of the fire isn’t known at this stage and an investigation will take place later today.”
