Surprise visit follows Christmas flooding

Prime Minister David Cameron paid a visit to Yalding today to see for himself the damage caused by the flooding this week.

The village was one of the worst hit in the county, and although much of the flood water has since subsided, it has caused misery for dozens of householders.

Mr Cameron met locals and officials from local support agencies to discuss the handling of the floods, as well as local businesses.

Mr Cameron said: “I’ve been meeting people in Yalding who’ve had a tough Christmas because of flooding. They’ve shown real spirit.”

Asked about the suitability of flood defences, he said lessons must be learned and that discussions would take place with the Environment Agency to minimise chances of a repeat.
