Officers are appealing for witnesses

Police officers in Ramsgate suspect a spate of fires at a block of flats in recent weeks have been started deliberately.

Firefighters have attended Trove Court in Newcastle Hill on a number of occasions over the past two months due to fires inside a rubbish chute.

Police officers visited the location on Wednesday along with representatives from Kent Fire and Rescue Service and East Kent Housing, where they carried out door-to-door enquiries and provided safety advice to residents.

Sergeant James Ross of Kent Police said: “While the cause of these fires is currently unknown, the belief is that they are being started deliberately.

“I would like to remind people that starting fires is not only incredibly dangerous and puts lives at risk, but that it also potentially diverts resources away from other more serious incidents.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact me by calling the appeal line on 01843 222289. Alternatively call Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”
