A rapist has been jailed for over eight years after he attacked a woman in Sheerness.
Ansra Mahmud, 36 and formerly of High Street in the town, raped his victim after he found her walking home alone.
He pleaded not guilty and was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on Wednesday following a seven day trial.
He was sentenced to a total of eight years and three months and will be on the sex offenders’ register for life.
The court heard that the victim was walking alone down Sheerness High Street at around 1am on July 24 last year before she was approached by Mahmud, who escorted her back to a secluded yard, off Victory Street, and then raped her.
Mahmud then drove her back to her house and left her with her friends. Shortly after she disclosed she had been attacked.
A Kent Police investigation followed, leading to Mahmud’s conviction.
Detective constable Nicola Hilton, the investigating officer for this case, said: “This was a perverse and predatory attack that dehumanised the victim in the worst way imaginable.
“There are no mitigating circumstances for his actions. He violated an innocent, young woman for his own sexual gratification and this memory will always be with her.
“Despite going through this ordeal, she has shown an incredible amount of bravery to testify against the offender.
“I hope that she can take some comfort from the sentence he has received, and from the fact this man is no longer a risk to other women due to her courage.”
