Maidstone Magistrates’ Court closed after ‘suspicious’ fire

Kent Police says enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the incident

Maidstone Magistrates’ Court is closed today following a suspected arson attack.

Kent Police was called at 11.29pm on Thursday evening to a report of a fire in Palace Avenue, where it was reported that a small fire had started on the ground outside the front doors of the court.

Officers attended along with Kent Fire and Rescue Service and the blaze was extinguished.

The incident is being treated as suspicious and enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Defendants due to attend the court today are understood to have been turned away as a result.
