A299 Thanet Way crash near Birchington: Driver fighting for his life after car smashes into recovery vehicle on hard shoulder

Crash took place around 9.45pm on Monday night - the road remained closed for 11 hours

Police are appealing for witnesses to the road smash on the A299 Thanet Way which left one man fighting for his life after a car crashed into the back of a recovery truck.

The crash occured at 9.45pm on Monday on the London-bound carriageway near St Nicolas-at-Wade.

Investigating officer detective constable Dave Holmes said: “A recovery truck had broken down and was stationary, straddling the hard shoulder and lane one.

“We believe that a black Vauxhall Astra has collided with the rear of the recovery truck. A blue Peugeot 406 was also involved in the collision.”

The driver and only occupant of the Astra, a 25-year-old man from the Sittingbourne area, sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to a London hospital.

No other injuries were reported.

DC Holmes added: “We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or saw any of the vehicles prior to it happening to contact us.”
