There was a multiple crash on the A249 in Sheppey after a crash between a coach an a car

The A249 Sheppey Bridge crossing was closed this morning after an accident involving eight vehicles.

Traffic was diverted via the old Kingsferry road and rail bridge while Kent Police and the Highways Agency dealt with the incident.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: “The accident happened at around 7am on the Sittingbourne bound carriageway of the bridge. There was a collision between a Vauxhall Corsa and a coach.

“Then in the ensuing tailback there were a number of other collisions between two cars. There were no serious injuries but the Highways Agency was called to clear up an oil spill that had been caused on the carriageway. The road reopened at 9.15am.”

Officers are investigating the circumstances of the accident but there were foggy conditions on the bridge at the time of the collision.
