The creator of a Sheppey made product which is flying off the shelves has spoken of his hopes to generate more jobs on the island.
Rob Knight, 33, from Penenden Heath, Maidstone, is the brains behind Ecoegg, an eco-friendly alternative to washing detergent.
The product, which is being championed by How Clean Is Your House star Kim Woodburn, was dreamt up by ‘ecowarrior’ Mr Knight and his business partner Dawn White, 34, in Kent.
He said: “It was two things that made us think of the idea. I was babysitting my sister’s children and her washing machine was on all day. I thought it must be costing her a fortune. Also, Dawn has sensitive skin and we tried almost every detergent out there without success.”
Ecoegg, which was launched in 2010, is filled with two different types of pellets and washes clothes when put in the drum of the machine.
It lasts up to 720 washes and the pellets are chemical free and so the product has been given the seal of approval by Allergy UK and National Eczema Society.
After selling a massive 100,000 of the eggs, mostly via shopping channel QVC, Mr Knight has managed to secure a deal with home store Lakeland to stock the product on its shelves. He is also in talks with one of the big four supermarkets.
Mr Knight said: “I am really excited to be able to go into the stores and see the products.”
The company headquarters are in West Malling and Ecoegg manufacturing work recently moved from China to Queenborough in Sheppey, creating six jobs.
Mr Knight said: “Sheppey is a really deprived area so we wanted to try and support it and do something in our backyard. The workers there are really reliable.”
But, with demand increasing, Mr Knight, who also employs seven people at Ecoegg HQ, thinks he will be able to increase the number of Kent staff.
He said: “Expansion is on the cards - we are getting orders left and right. I would like to double the Kent workforce by next year.”
The company already sells to Italy and Germany and is launching in America and Canada this month.
TV personality Ms Woodburn, who lives near Tunbridge Wells, is happy to promote the product, which helped her with her Eczema.
She said: “It is absolutely fabulous. I am delighted to be associated with it. I get offered many things to promote but I don’t approve of them and they end up in my garage and then donated to charity.”
The Queen of clean, 70, has been busy recently as she gets ready to film a new Channel 4 show.
The details remain top secret, but it will involve celebrities like Gordon Ramsay and Gok Wan as well as retail guru Mary Portas.
Ms Portas will also be helping Ashford, Dartford and Margate reinvent their High Streets after they were chosen to be Portas Pilots this year.
