The cause of the fire is still being investigated

A leisure centre which suffered thousands of pounds worth of damage after a fire earlier this month will reopen tomorrow at 6am.

The swimming pool, health suite, swimming teaching programme, main sports hall, crèche, group exercise and social functions at Cygnet Leisure Centre in Northfleet will be fully operational and normal programmes will resume at this stage.

Meanwhile, the health suite has also been redecorated since the centre closed on March 10, following a fire which is still being investigated.

The gym area has been considerably damaged by the fire and this area will require complete refurbishment, which is expected to take a number of months to complete.

However, a temporary gym facility has been set up that provides stations for cardiovascular, strength, free weights and a functional training area, though the provision of squash courts has been reduced as a result.

Rob Swain, managing director of Gravesham Community Leisure Limited said: “I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank our loyal users for their patience and understanding during this very upsetting and trying period.

“I also express my sincere thanks to all of the staff from Gravesham Community Leisure Limited, Gravesham Borough Council and contractors for their hard work and dedication in getting the leisure centre ready to be reopened for the local community.

“Once again I would like to apologise to all of our users for the inconvenience that Cygnet being closed has caused.

“I hope that everyone will continue to be patient while we get the gym area and squash courts back to full capacity.”

Bosses are also reminding residents of facilities at Cascades Leisure Centre and The Swanscombe Centre which everyone can take full advantage of whilst repair work is undertaken to the gym at Cygnet.
