Council ignores massive opposition
Plans to build 5,750 homes on farmland just outside Ashford have been definitively approved by the borough council.
Despite massive opposition, including a petition signed by 8,000 people, planners gave the go-ahead to the application to build on land at Chilmington Green, destroying 1,000 acres of countryside.
The tiny hamlet, home to 11 listed buildings, many of which date back to Tudor times, will become unrecognisable.
Karen Hopkins, from the Keep Chilmington Green campaign group, told the meeting: “To destroy 1,000 acres of countryside by building a brick and concrete monster is nothing short of vandalism.”
But councillors said they needed to consider what was best for the whole borough.
