Man arrested and in police custody

Police have arrested a man following an attack on a mosque in Gillingham last night - believed to be motivated by the brutal murder on the streets of Woolwich yesterday afternoon.

While police investigate the Woolwich attack - which left a man dead amid claims the killers could be Islamic extremists - Kent Police were called to the mosque in Canterbury Street at around 8.40pm last night.

They confirmed a man was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated criminal damage.

It is not thought anyone was hurt in the incident.

Kent Police say they are stepping up patrols in order to ease any concerns following Wednesday’s incident.

It was confirmed this morning that the man killed was a serving British soldier. His family have been informed.
