Whitstable 'no-go' zone as floods hit

Police road blocks are preventing access to Whitstable after torrential rain left parts of the town under water.

Floods left homes and businesses under water as storms ripped across the county.

Cars were being allowed to exit - but not enter - the town as fire crews looked to pump the water out.
Among the worst hit areas were Cromwell Road, Regent Street and Warwick Road.

Earlier, storm damage caused flooding and commuter chaos on roads and railways on Tuesday morning as high winds, heavy rain and thunder and lightning hit the county.

Trees were blown down causing blocked roads and the London bound carriageway of the M20 saw traffic at a standstill due to poor road conditions.

A three-vehicle collision closed one carriageway as police dealt with wreckage.

However a spokeswoman said no-one was injured in the crash.

A lightning strike damaged railway equipment in east Kent causing trains to be cancelled.

Engineers were called to repair the damage which affected signalling equipment in the Folkestone area.

Buses were brought in between Ramsgate and Dover adding around 45 minutes to journeys.

Services from east Kent to Ashford and Medway are delayed.

Rail operator Southeastern said that the lightning strike had knocked out a signal box and also damaged points on the railway line.

Spokesman Martin Smith said: "Engineers are working as fast as possible to restore services but unfortunately there will be short-notice alterations and delays."

Overnight storms in the area also led to some road closures after flooding.

Police said floods had closed the A256 in Dover, and Haven Drive in Hawkinge.

Trees were blown down in high ground in the Challock area and other flooding was reported across Romney Marsh.
