Two people who sparked a multi-agency search for a ‘missing girl’ have been released on police bail.
The 33-year-old man and 47-year-old woman, both from Rochester, were alleged to have called police at 1.25pm yesterday saying they had seen a young girl – thought to be six years old - fall in to the River Medway near Sun Pier, Chatham.
Emergency services including the Thames Coastguard and a search helicopter were scrambled and spent more than an hour-and-a-half scouring the riverside.
Following an extensive search, no child was found.
The two callers were then questioned and arrested on suspicion of wasting police time.
They are due back at Medway Police Station on September 24.
Superintendent Des Keers: “I would like to thank all emergency services and the Royal Engineer Boat school for their professional conduct during this search.
“I am confident that we all worked extremely well in what were very difficult circumstances.
“Our response highlights the fact that we take all calls extremely seriously and are well prepared to deal with incidents such as this when required.”
