Don’t expect the people of Kent to come out of the bathroom any time soon – they are probably reading in there.
According to a new report from a company that supplies magazine subscriptions, 27 per cent of people in Kent admit they fill in their private time by reading while on the throne.
A more relaxing place to read is in bed, and 59 per cent of people across Kent like to take in a few pages before lights out.
Women in Kent were most likely to say they read their magazine as an escape while their husbands watch sport on TV.
The garden and conservatory are particularly popular places to read magazines. One person even claimed they did it while sky-diving.
As a whole, Kent is the county where people are most likely to subscribe to a genealogy magazine for some help in family tree research. People in Canterbury are more likely than anyone in the country to subscribe to caravan magazines.
And those who prefer pedal power to horsepower are twice as likely to subscribe to a cycling magazine than a motoring magazine. The results are taken from the largest ever survey of UK magazine subscribers – some four million of them. It was carried out for website magazinesbymail.net.
Researchers found that while many people in Kent read in the loo, just 12 per cent of those outside the UK would dream of doing such a thing – making it a very British tradition.
Women’s magazines are the favourite among subscribers, with house and home titles also featuring highly, followed closely by computing and country titles.
Nicola Rowe, of magazinesbymail.net, said: “The survey reveals marked variations in reading habits across the UK. However, it is clear that whatever the subject and wherever the chosen reading place may be, millions choose to keep up to date with their hobbies and interests by subscribing to a magazine.”
More than four million magazine subscriptions were researched and 7,000 people took part in the survey in June.
