A teenage girl was stabbed in the back on her way home from school yesterday afternoon.
Jade Sullivan, 14, was attacked as she walked home from the Strood Academy in Carnation Road.
The stunned teenager was treated by paramedics at the scene shortly after 3pm and taken to Medway Maritime Hospital for treatment.
A police spokesman said the girl's injuries sustained in the "single puncture wound" were not life threatening.
Detective Inspector Ann Lisseman said: “The teenager remains in hospital, but her condition is not serious or life threatening.
“There have been some assumptions that the injury was caused by some kind of sharp implement, however this has not yet been confirmed.
“This was an isolated incident, which did not occur in or close to school grounds in the area.
“We are continuing to investigate the circumstances of this incident and anyone who did witness an assault on Carnation Road or who was in the area at the time should contact Kent Police in Medway on 01634 792323 or call Kent CrimeStoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
Neighbours described chaos outside the school yesterday afternoon before the teenager was taken to hospital with a puncture wound.
One woman, who did not wish to be named, said: "There were police everywhere - they even had a helicopter circling overhead looking for the person.
"I don't know what is going on at that place but it's pretty scary."
The flagship academy was formally opened in a glitzy ceremony at the beginning of last month by TV presenter Loyd Grossman.
The Masterchef legend is chair of the board of governors of the school's private sponsor the University for the Creative Arts.
