Nott takes over as Stones' caretaker manager

Maidstone United have appointed reserve team boss Peter Nott as caretaker manager for the remainder of the season, following the departure of Alan Walker and Lloyd Hume.

The Stones, who are 15th in the Ryman Premier League, have moved quickly to promote Nott to the vacant manager post for the remainder of the season after Walker and Hume handed in their resignation at the beginning of the week. The management duo, who had been in charge at the club since 2004, claimed they were unable to take the club further up the non-league ladder.

Nott, who helped develop Manchester United’s Chris Smalling while playing for the Stones youth side, will have under-18 manager Tony Cornwell as his assistant. Their position will be reviewed in April, with a view to offering the duo a further two-year agreement.

Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown said: “We are all grown men, but I have to admit that the past 48 hours have been very traumatic for me, having to say goodbye to Alan and Lloyd and then ask two loyal servants of the club to steady this ship, drive it forward and make sure we are playing Ryman Premier football again next season.”

Nott and Cornwell, who step up from leading Stones’ reserve development squad for the last eight years, said in a joint-statement: “There was certainly a little bit of a tingle in both our stomachs when the chairman offered us the post as it is something we had always hoped we would be offered one day.”

The new management team will take charge of the club for the first time tonight (Tuesday), when Maidstone host Hendon at Homelands.

Elsewhere, club captain Jay Saunders has been offered the role of player-coach and is expected to give the new management team his decision this week.
