John Barrowman comes to Kent - on Valentine's Day

Dr Who and Torchwood star John Barrowman will be in Kent on Valentine’s Day to sign copies of his new book.

Barrowman was also a judge in the hit talent musical shows How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? and Any Dream Will Do.

The 40-year-old’s career has seen him appear regularly on stage and screen including parts in film, television, musical theatre, and music recording.

But the openly gay actor admits he didn’t get much backing from his school when he set out for a career in the arts. His family moved from Glasgow to America when he was just nine.

In his autobiography Anything Goes, he said at graduation he was asked what the future held for him and he replied that he wanted to go onto the stage.

The book tells the revelatory, funny, insightful, fairytale narrative of how one boy achieved his dreams, all done with Barrowman’s trademark charm, as well as revealing behind-the-scenes secrets of some of the biggest names in show business.

Writing the book with his university professor and journalist sister Carol, the entertainer describes his emotions as he emigrated, admitting to his family that he was gay and his 2006 civil partnership with long-term partner Scott Gill - plus turning down what could have been a steady job with Disney.

Barrowman currently stars as Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who, plus Torchwood, which took a Best Drama Bafta.

He took the name of the book from his first big break when he starred alongside Elaine Paige in the show Anything Goes.

Since then, Barrowman has made a name for himself with West End achievements including an Olivier Award nomination and success in the movies The Producers and De-Lovely.

He will be signing £18.99 hardback copies at Waterstone’s in Bluewater on Thursday, February 14, from 5.30pm.

Lucy Hudson, from Waterstone’s, said: “I’m a huge fan of John Barrowman and we’re all so excited that he’s coming here to sign his autobiography.

“It’s a great signing to begin the year with and continues our surge of high-profile authors to sign at our store.”
