The Countess of Wessex will launch Benenden Hospital’s centenary celebrations in style when she unveils a commemorative sculpture later this month.
The Countess will meet staff, patients and their families, and look around the hospital in Cranbrook when she visits on on Thursday, April 26.
Commissioned to mark the hospital’s centenary year, the sculpture, entitled All Clear, is a 9ft high bronze figure reaching towards the sky.
It was created by local artist Bob Allan who drew inspiration from his own health experiences and time in intensive care.
“We are absolutely delighted that The Countess of Wessex has agreed to join us in our celebrations and formally dedicate the sculpture.
“This continues our long association with the Royal Family; it will also be a privilege to show the Countess our hospital as well as give staff and patients the opportunity to meet her,” said hospital director Ken Hesketh.
“This is a very happy year for us all and we have organised a special programme of events for staff and the public to celebrate our centenary.”
Until her death in 2002 the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother was the hospital’s and the Benenden Healthcare Society’s patron.
The hospital was founded in 1907 as a TB sanatorium and is now an independent charitable trust.
