Chris McPhee turned down a move
By Tom Howard

A packed fixture list has prompted Ebbsfleet manager Liam Daish to look for reinforcements as his side battle for league survival and FA Trophy glory.

Fleet are scheduled to play 19 games in the remaining seven weeks of the season following a number of postponements due to the cold winter and cup runs in the FA Trophy, FA Cup and Setanta Shield.

Towards the end of this month Fleet will play four games in eight days and the busy schedule has led to Daish and assistant Alan Kimble to bring in more players for the run-in.

The search even led them to an approach for Fleet’s 2008 FA Trophy hero Chris McPhee, who subsequently joined Kidderminster Harriers from cash-strapped Weymouth this week.

Kimble said: “I think we will need at least two or three players, but we will not bring in just anyone they have to be better than what we already have. One thing that is for sure is everyone in the squad will get their chance to play and the players are up to the task.

“We tried to get him [McPhee], but unfortunately it did not come off and Chris decided to sign for Kidderminster at the end of the day, which is closer to his home.”

Tomorrow afternoon Fleet have the chance to take a step nearer to ensuring their Blue Square Premier League status when they host lowly York City.

Daish’s side are hovering just a point above the relegation zone, but have up to five games in hand on their rivals in the bottom six, which Kimble feels they must take advantage of.

He added: “All the games are important and it is going to ask a lot of our players. Looking towards Sunday it gives us chance to get back in league action and it will be a massive game for us.

“The games in hand are important and we have got to capitalise on them and move up the table. Thankfully the teams below us have failed to overtake us. After probably our best performance of the season against Wrexham [a 3-1 win in the FA Trophy] last week, the boys are in good spirit. ”
