UP to eight people are without homes after a fire ravaged a block of flats in Thanet.
The third and fourth floors have been left severely damaged by the fire, said firefighters.
As the blaze spread to the roof at Hawley Square around 70 firefighters and 12 fire engines were at the scene in the early hours of Wednesday.
Kent Fire and Rescue Service said initial reports that people were trapped inside the building proved unfounded and no one was injured.
The Red Cross was on hand to care for the residents evacuated from six flats in the building.
Station Manager Andrew McPherson, who was the officer in charge, said: “It was well alight when the first crew from Margate arrived after just a few minutes and it was a difficult job because the roof had collapsed so it wasn’t safe to fight from within.
“The building itself is severely damaged but the crews have done an excellent job of stopping the spread to an adjacent building.”
Three fire engines remained at the scene on Wednesday morning and an investigation has been launched to discover the cause.
