Firefighters have launched a campaign to convince developers and planning bosses to install sprinkler systems in homes and schools across Kent.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) unveiled the initiative as part of its bid to cut the number of fire-related deaths to zero.

Charlie Hendry, the chief fire officer, said: “Kent and Medway face a massive house-building programme over the coming years and I believe those who plan, design and build new homes have a responsibility to make sure residents are safe from the potentially devastating effects of fire.

“We are urging the county’s key opinion formers to endorse the installation of sprinkler systems in all new homes and also in existing properties where vulnerable people are most at risk.”

Council chief executives, planning officers and landlords have been invited to the launch of the Safer with Sprinklers campaign on Friday in Maidstone.

Joyce Rhodes, the headteacher at the Lympne School near Folkestone, will describe how the school was destroyed by fire and the impact this had on the community.

The audience will watch a demonstration on the difference sprinkler systems make to a burning room.
