KENT NEWS: A Kent-based soldier has been killed by an explosion in Afghanistan.
The Ministry of Defence says the unidentified fighter was a member of 36 Engineer Regiment, which is based at Invicta Park Barracks in Maidstone.
He was killed by a blast in the Nad-e-Ali district in central Helmand Province yesterday.
The soldier’s next of kin have been informed.
The fatality is a grim landmark for the war in Afghanistan, as it means more fighters have now been killed there than during the 1982 Falklands conflict.
Lt Col David Wakefield praised the "indomitable courage and fortitude" of the Kent-based soldier.
He told the BBC: "He was leading a team conducting route clearance operations at the time, making the way ahead safe for others to follow."
