The Duchess of Gloucester
The Duchess of Gloucester today officially opened a new unit at The Heart of Kent Hospice after it underwent a £286,000 transformation, Yourmaidstone reports.

The Duchess unveiled the new inpatient unit at the hospice for terminally-ill adults in Aylesford on Wednesday morning.

The unit has been completely redecorated and now has new furnishings including curtains, beddings, new flooring and radiators.

There is also new over-bed lighting and ceiling hoists for each room, as well a new bathroom.

The work was carried out as a result of a grant of £286,000 from the Department of Health to improve the patients’ environment.

Additional work including a new bathroom, family bedroom and complementary therapy room were funded by the Frances Winham Foundation, Genzyme Corporation and the Caron Keating Foundaton.

Hospice chief executive Kate Bosley said: “We are proud of this achievement. This refurbishment project is testimony to our ongoing commitment to improve the quality of our service with patients at the centre of all that we do.

“The facilities were modernised to serve the needs of patients and their families. This refurbishment will enable us involved in the project.”

The Duchess was greeted with a formal welcome to Kent by the Lord Lieutenant and to the Heart of Kent Hospice by its patron Marianna, Viscountess Monckton of Brenchley.

Her Royal Highness spent most of her time on the ward, as well as having the chance to meet some members of the project team before unveiling a plaque to commemorate her visit.
