Charlton Athletic got a new era outside the Premiership off to a winning start on Wednesday as they strolled to a 2-0 win in a pre-season match with Welling United.
A crowd of 3,500 packed into Park View Road to watch Alan Pardew’s men – comprising of a host of new faces – take victory.
And it was £2.5m summer signing Luke Varney and former Erith & Belvedere hitman Chris Dickson who grabbed the goals.
The Addicks paraded six new signings as well as three triallists.
Meanwhile, simultaneously, another Charlton side – led by assistant boss Phil Parkinson – swept to a comfortable win against non-league Tooting & Mitcham.
New signing Chris Iwelumo scored twice, with Marcus Bent, Andy Reid and James Walker completing the scoring in a 5-0 whitewash.
