More than 100 convicts had to be evacuated from a prison after bacteria which causes the potentially fatal Legionnaires’ disease was found.
The Legionella bacteria was found on one wing of Maidstone Jail during routine checks on Thursday.
A Ministry of Justice spokesman said inmates on the wing have now been moved to other prisons, but would not say where they have gone.
He said no one has been taken ill since the bacteria was discovered and prison bosses are confident they have prevented an outbreak of the disease, which causes severe cases of pneumonia.
Maidstone Prison holds nearly 600 inmates in four wings and a segregation unit. Past inmates have included disgraced pop mogul Jonathan King.
