Eco-protestors shut off nearly two per cent of the country’s electricity supply after breaking into Kingsnorth power station, Yourmedway reports.
A climate campaigner switched off one of four turbines at the Hoo peninsula plant, while others daubed protest messages across the plant.
The turbine was off for four hours, losing up to 500 megawatts of power – enough to power a city the size of Bristol.
CCTV cameras caught the protestors climbing an electric security fence, not working at the time, before entering the plant.
Having switched off Unit Two, they used a control panel to go through the complex procedure of powering down the machinery.
The activists then left through an entrance thought to be only familiar to employees.
Pressure groups such as Greenpeace and the Camp for Climate Action, who have targeted the plant in recent month, have yet to claim responsibility for the action, which took place on Friday November 28.
An E.ON spokesman said: “While we are respectful of people’s right to peaceful and lawful protest, this was clearly neither of those and could have had very serious implications, not least because of the potential for serious injury or worse.
“Thankfully, our site team responded very quickly and professionally to ensure that the situation was brought under control.
“We have launched an investigation and are working closely with the police on their inquiries. Kingsnorth power station remains operational.”
