Thanet councillors have voted to look at the plans for the first phase of the China Gateway project more closely.
At the Thanet council chambers in Margate last night (Wednesday) the planning committee deferred the matter to full council.
In front of a packed public gallery, a decision of deferral was just carried by eight votes to seven, to cheers and applause from many who had filed in to watch the meeting.
One campaigner who opposes the project said: “I’m shocked but happy. This is totally unexpected.”
The vote came after Labour county councillor and planning committee member Alan Poole moved a motion to send the issue to full council.
Many of the campaigners who attended had resigned themselves to the application being rubber-stamped after council officers had recommended Phase 1 of the project be approved.
