A giant pink handbag is set to take to the skies today along with an aerodynamic toilet and flying fruit carts.
The homemade human-powered flying machines will be launching in London’s Hyde Park from a 20ft ramp above The Serpentine lake as part of the Red Bull Flugtag, which starts at 1pm.
Tanya Conyers-Silverthorn, from Broadstairs, is a member of the Blonde Bimbos – one of the 41 teams taking part in the challenge after competitors were whittled down from 2,000 entries.
She said: “We’re going to wear fabulous blonde wigs, doing a fantastic dance to Dolly Parton’s Nine to Five wearing white stilettos, white hot pants and pink T-shirts with Blonde Bimbos written on them and huge-blow up boobs.”
Getting in character for the event, the 35-year-old added: “We’re going to fly to Heathrow, but we’re worried about smudging our make-up and getting our hair wet.”
She said the team’s flying machine was made from feathers “because they make you fly”, crystals and sparkly pink fabric.
Teams will be judged on the distance they fly, the creativity of their machine and their pre-flight performance. It is a ticketed event and entrance is free but allocated through an online ballot system at www.redbullflugtag.co.uk.
