Police crash car-meet advertised on internet

Motorists who organised a car meet on a social networking website were shocked to find the police had turned up before them.

Last Saturday officers set up a check-point in Sovereign Way, Tonbridge, and, using automatic number plate-reading technology, stopped 50 cars suspected of being driven in an anti-social manner.

A total of 40 traffic-related offences were dealt with, including punishing those drivers whose cars had tinted front windows.

Such a modification can significantly restrict a motorist’s vision when visibility is poor, and can cost the owner a £60 fine and three penalty points.

One driver spotted performing a handbrake-turn was given a section 59 warning that means he will have his car taken away if he is caught doing so again.

Cllr Nicolas Heslop, who paid a visit to the check-point, said: "I am sure the vast majority of residents appreciate the benefits to all road-users and communities of regular road safety campaigns."
