Gravesend Borough Council are making the Chinese new year with a special lion dance and authentic oriental entertainment.

A parade, led by a Chinese lion, will celebrate the beginning of the Year of the Rooster. Starting at 11am on January 31 from the Borough Market, the lion will be ‘woken’ before eating and scattering green leaves which symbolizes a fresh start for the new year and good luck.

The lion will then visit local businesses to receive more traditional green leaves on its way up to Community Square.

Entertainment will then follow in the Woodville auditorium from 11:45am including Chinese martial arts, singing, dancing and music.

Chinese new year is also called Lunar new year because the dates are based on the Chinese lunar calendar. The date fluctuates but comes in either January or February and celebrations usually last up to two weeks

Mayor of Gravesham Cllr Greta Goatley said: “Motivation and confidence are characteristics of the year of the Rooster which are important traits. We really do have lot of talented people of all ages in Gravesham which is something I have witnessed lots so far as my time as Mayor.”
